Are Yellow Diamonds More Valuable Than Traditional White Diamonds?

Natural yellow diamonds are fairly common amongst fancy colored diamonds, nevertheless they are significantly more rare than white diamonds. Yellow diamonds look wonderful when they are mixed with white diamonds and typically yellow diamonds are set in yellow gold. A 3-stone ring should include white diamonds and the yellow diamond should be placed in the middle. White stones in trapeze, oval or triangle shapes will make a beautiful setting.



Like in other natural fancy color diamonds the color remains the main thing that influences the value of the diamond, then comes size and clarity. Clarity is also crucial in the evaluation of yellow diamonds, though this is much less than in white diamonds.



The ideal cut for fancy colored diamonds is the Radiant cut. This is the ideal shape to maximize the color. Yellow diamonds, however, can also be found in Oval Cut an Cushion cut and in Heart and Pear shapes. The rarest are the Emerald, Square Emerald and the Brilliant cuts (round shape). Prices for these shapes are substantially higher for all fancy diamonds and not just for yellow diamonds.



Fancy colored diamonds are held to an entirely different standard in regards to cut quality. The goal when cutting a fancy color diamond should be to intensify the depth and saturation of the diamond's color while managing to strike a balance between carat weight and brilliance. It is essential that the stone is purchased with a grading report from a reliable diamond lab such as GIA, HRD, IGI or EGL. The report needs to state that the color is "Natural". The report must also describe the intensity of color, along with the color distribution throughout the diamond.



The Kimberley Octahedron is the biggest naturally formed actohedral diamond in the world. It's owner, who is the mine owner has decided against cutting this diamond , but to keep it in its original statetherefore the color and distribution grades are not able to be applied to this magnificent diamond.
